The Lorentz force is the force exerted on a charged particle by electric and magnetic fields, and is proportional to the signed charge q. The electric force acts in the direction of the electric field for positive charges and opposite the field for negative charges. The magnetic force is perpendicular to both the particle's velocity and the magnetic field (hence the cross product), and also reverses if the charge is negative.
