Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy governs the manner in which Math Easy Solutions collects, uses, maintains and discloses information collected from users (each, a "User") of the mes.fm website ("Site"). This privacy policy applies to the Site and all products and services offered by Math Easy Solutions.

Personal identification information

We may collect personal identification information from Users in a variety of ways, including, but not limited to, when Users visit our site, register on the site, place an order, subscribe to the newsletter, respond to a survey, fill out a form, and in connection with other activities, services, features or resources we make available on our Site. Users may be asked for, as appropriate, name, email address. Users may, however, visit our Site anonymously. We will collect personal identification information from Users only if they voluntarily submit such information to us. Users can always refuse to supply personally identification information, except that it may prevent them from engaging in certain Site related activities.

Non-personal identification information

We may collect non-personal identification information about Users whenever they interact with our Site. Non-personal identification information may include the browser name, the type of computer and technical information about Users means of connection to our Site, such as the operating system and the Internet service providers utilized and other similar information.

Page view statistics and our Google Ads

We count page views to see which pages are used (they are shown publicly, as totals, on our stats page). Each count records the page, a coarse device type (desktop, mobile, tablet) and where the visit came from (for example Google search, another website, or one of our Google Ads). It does not record your IP address, your name or any other personal information, and it uses no cookies.

If you first arrive by clicking one of our Google Ads, your browser remembers that ad's landing page and the day, in its own local storage on your device, for up to 180 days. When you later come back on your own, that lets us count "came back" in the same totals, so we can tell whether our ads bring people who find the tools useful. Nothing that identifies you is stored or sent, and you can remove it at any time by clearing this site's data in your browser.

Page ratings and feedback

Most pages have a "Rate this page" row of stars near the bottom. When you rate a page we store the page, the number of stars, and a random number your browser makes up for itself (kept in your browser's local storage, so you can change your rating later; only a scrambled form of it is kept on our server). To stop one person or script from rating a page over and over, we also keep a salted, one-way hash of your internet (IP) address together with that page for 30 days, and a count of ratings per hashed address for one hour. Your IP address itself is never stored. The totals (number of ratings, average and how many of each star) are shown publicly on our ratings page.

The "Tell us more" and feedback boxes do not send or store anything on mes.fm: they only fill in an email in your own email app, or our contact form, which you then send yourself. What you write is not posted on the site.

Party invitations

When you make an invitation with MES Party, we store its details (name, date, place, description, settings, updates, questions and the "what to bring" list) and the replies guests send (the name they type, their reply, plus-ones, note and answers) on our server until two months after the event; then they are deleted (the host can also delete the event at any time). Anyone with the invitation's link can see it; the host chooses whether guests see the guest list, only the numbers, or nothing, and only the host sees answers to questions. To let a guest change their own reply, we keep a scrambled form of a random number their browser makes up for itself, and, to limit spam from one network, a salted, one-way hash of the internet (IP) address with a count of replies from it; the IP address itself is never stored. The secret key that lets the host change the event is stored only as a one-way hash; the list of your events and their keys is kept in your own browser.

Polls

When you make a poll with MES Polls, we store its question, description, options and settings, and the vote counts, on our server until 60 days after the poll closes; then they are deleted (the person who made a poll can also delete it at any time). Anyone with a poll's link can see it. To let each browser vote only once, we keep a scrambled form of a random number your browser makes up for itself together with the options it picked, and, to limit votes from one network, a salted, one-way hash of your internet (IP) address with a count of votes from it; your IP address itself is never stored, and nobody, including the poll's maker, can see who voted for what. The list of polls you made and the secret keys that let you close or delete them are kept only in your own browser.

If you choose to publish a poll on Hive, or vote in a Hive poll, Hive Keychain (in your own browser) signs and sends it straight to the Hive blockchain, where it is public and permanent; nothing about it passes through mes.fm. To show a Hive poll's results, the page reads public data from Hive nodes and from PeakD's open polls service (polls.hivehub.dev).

Web browser cookies

Our Site may use "cookies" to enhance User experience. User's web browser places cookies on their hard drive for record-keeping purposes and sometimes to track information about them. User may choose to set their web browser to refuse cookies, or to alert you when cookies are being sent. If they do so, note that some parts of the Site may not function properly.

Pictures and files you use in our tools

Most of our tools (for example the Photo Editor, Image Converter, EXIF Viewer, PDF tools, calculators, the timer and the speed reader) work entirely inside your web browser. The pictures, PDFs, text and numbers you put into them are not uploaded to our servers. Some tools save your settings or work on your own device, using your browser's local storage; you can clear this at any time in your browser settings.

Photo Editor: "Share as a link"

Only when you press Link (or File → Share as a link) in the Photo Editor and then Upload and get link, a copy of your picture is sent directly from your browser to Litterbox (catbox.moe), a free third-party temporary file host, which gives back a public link that expires after the time you choose (1 hour to 3 days). The picture does not pass through or get stored on our servers, anyone with the link can view it, and the host's own privacy policy applies to it. Nothing is uploaded unless you press that button.

Pronounce

On MES Pronounce the voices are the ones built into your device and browser. The syllables and IPA come from a dictionary served by mes.fm itself. When you look up a single English word, the page also asks the free dictionaryapi.dev service for recordings and other transcriptions of that word, and the recordings are played from Wikimedia Commons; only the word is sent. If you use Practice, your browser's own speech recognition listens to the microphone (in Chrome this is done by the browser maker's speech service); nothing you say is sent to mes.fm. Your recent words and voice settings stay in your browser.

Translate and Image to Text

On MES Translate and Image to Text, pictures and PDFs are always read in your own browser (the text reader, Tesseract, and its language data are downloaded from the jsDelivr CDN and run on your device); they are never uploaded. Translation works one of two ways, and the page says which one it used under the Translate button:

  • On this device: in browsers that have a built-in translator (recent Chrome and Edge on a computer), the browser itself translates the text on your computer after a one-time language-pack download. Your text is not sent to us or to anyone else.
  • Online: in other browsers, or when you choose the online engine, the text you translate (not the picture) is sent from your browser to the free MyMemory translation service (api.mymemory.translated.net, run by Translated srl), which returns the translation. MyMemory's own terms and privacy policy apply to that text, and it may keep it in its translation memory, so do not translate passwords or confidential documents this way. The page never sends text online while you are still typing: only when you press Translate.

Your recent translations are kept only in your browser's local storage (you can switch this off or clear it on the page), and a share link carries its text in the link itself; nothing is stored on our servers.

If you open a picture from a link and the other website does not allow its pictures to be loaded straight into other sites, our server (mes.fm/api/image-fetch) downloads that one file for you and passes it to your browser without keeping a copy; the other site then sees our server's request instead of yours, and the picture is still read only in your browser.

LaTeX Render: Picture to LaTeX

On MES LaTeX Render, a picture you give to Picture to LaTeX (by uploading, pasting, dropping, taking a photo or opening a link) is read in your own browser and is never uploaded. The first time you read a formula, your browser downloads the formula-reading model (Pix2Text MFR, about 120 MB) from Hugging Face (huggingface.co) and the AI engine from the jsDelivr CDN, then keeps them on your device; for ordinary text the Tesseract text reader is downloaded from jsDelivr. Those sites see a normal download request from your browser, not your picture. A picture opened from a link is fetched the same way as on Image to Text above (through mes.fm/api/image-fetch only when the other site blocks direct loading, without keeping a copy).

Reverse Image Search: a temporary copy of your picture

There is one exception, and it applies only to the Reverse Image Search tool when you give it a picture file (by uploading, dropping or pasting one) and press its Open button with the option Let the sites load my picture automatically switched on. Search sites such as Google Lens, Bing, Yandex and TinEye can only open a picture by themselves if they are given a link to it, so in that case:

  • a resized copy of your picture (a JPEG of at most about 650 KB) is uploaded to our server and stored for one hour, then deleted automatically;
  • it is kept under a long random link that cannot be guessed, and is not listed, searchable or used for anything else (it is marked so that search engines do not index it);
  • the search sites you tick receive that link and load the picture from it, and what they do with it is covered by their own privacy policies;
  • to limit abuse we count uploads per visitor per hour, using a one-way scrambled form of the visitor's IP address that expires after about an hour; we do not store the IP address itself for this;
  • if you switch the option off, or paste an image link instead of a file, nothing is uploaded: the picture stays on your device and you paste it into each site yourself.

Please do not use the tool with pictures that you are not allowed to share, or that you do not want anyone with the link to be able to open during that hour.

We do not sell, trade, or rent Users personal identification information to others. We may share generic aggregated demographic information not linked to any personal identification information regarding visitors and users with our business partners, trusted affiliates and advertisers for the purposes outlined above.

Third party websites

We do not control the content or links that appear on these sites and are not responsible for the practices employed by websites linked to or from our Site. In addition, these sites or services, including their content and links, may be constantly changing. These sites and services may have their own privacy policies and customer service policies. Browsing and interaction on any other website, including websites which have a link to our Site, is subject to that website's own terms and policies.

Hive comments and ad-free (Premium)

Pages that copy a post from the Hive blockchain show the replies to that post in a "Hive comments" tab. They are loaded in your browser straight from public Hive servers (api.hive.blog and similar). If you log in with Hive Keychain to reply or vote, Keychain signs a short message to prove the account is yours; your Hive username is then kept in your browser's local storage, and your keys never leave Keychain. Replies and votes you make are posted publicly on the Hive blockchain under your account, like on any Hive website, and cannot be fully deleted. mes.fm does not store them.

If your browser has no Keychain extension (for example on a phone), you can log in with the Hive Keychain phone app instead (HiveAuth). Your browser then talks to the public HiveAuth relay server wss://hive-auth.arcange.eu, run by a Hive community member, not by mes.fm. The relay sees your Hive username and when a request is made; what you are asked to sign is encrypted with a random key that only your browser and the app know. Your keys stay in the app. That key, the session and your username are kept in your browser's local storage ("mes-hive-has", "mes-hive-user") until the app's login expires or you log out. This login cannot use your memo key, so encrypted Copy Text backups are not available with it.

On mes.fm/premium you can turn off the ads for 1 HBD a month, paid to the Hive account @mes. Payments on Hive are public: anyone can see that your account sent HBD to @mes and the memo ("mes.fm ad-free"). To check a payment, your browser sends your Hive username to our server, which reads your account's public transfers to @mes from the blockchain and answers with the date your ad-free time ends; it keeps nothing about you. That date and your username are saved in your browser's local storage ("mes-adfree") and checked again about once a day. While it is valid, mes.fm does not load Google's ad script at all. You can show the ads again or log out on that page at any time.

Backups to your Hive account (Copy Text)

On Copy Text you can choose "Save to Hive" to back up your texts to your own Hive account. Your browser packs the backup and Hive Keychain signs it onto the Hive blockchain with your posting key; nothing goes through a mes.fm server and we keep no copy. With "Encrypt" on (the default), the backup is encrypted in your browser with a new random key, and only that key is locked to your own Hive memo key, so only you can open it. Everything written to Hive is public and permanent: anyone can see that your account saved a Copy Text backup, when, and how big it is, and it can never be deleted ("Hide" only hides it from the list). If you turn "Encrypt" off, anyone can read the texts in that backup, forever. Loading a backup reads your account's public history from Hive servers (api.hive.blog and similar).

Open Limits app (Android and iPhone)

The Open Limits app counts how many times a day you open the apps you choose and locks them when the opens are used up. Your limits, counts and reasons are stored only on your phone. The app has no account, no ads and no analytics, and it sends nothing to mes.fm or anyone else.

On Android it uses the Accessibility service only to see which app is on screen (window changes). It does not read the content of your screen, type or tap for you, or record anything about the apps beyond the daily open counts you see in the app. On iPhone it uses Apple's Screen Time API (Family Controls); Apple gives the app anonymous tokens for the apps you pick, so the app never learns which apps you use. If Android backup is on, your settings may be included in your own Google backup.

Saving Copy Text online (Sync)

On Copy Text you can turn on "Sync" to keep your texts in one file, copy-text.json, in your own cloud storage. Your browser writes that file itself; it never goes through a mes.fm server and we keep no copy. If you pick a file in your OneDrive, Dropbox, Google Drive or iCloud folder, the browser only gets access to that one file, and the service's own app on your computer uploads it. If you connect a Dropbox, OneDrive or Google Drive account directly, you sign in on that service's own page and allow access to an app folder only (not the rest of your files); the access key it gives is kept in your browser's local storage, sent only to that service, and removed when you press Disconnect. The file is stored under that service's own privacy policy and terms.

Advertising

Ads appearing on our site may be delivered to Users by advertising partners, who may set cookies. These cookies allow the ad server to recognize your computer each time they send you an online advertisement to compile non personal identification information about you or others who use your computer. This information allows ad networks to, among other things, deliver targeted advertisements that they believe will be of most interest to you. This privacy policy does not cover the use of cookies by any advertisers.

Google Adsense

Some of the ads may be served by Google. Google's use of the DART cookie enables it to serve ads to Users based on their visit to our Site and other sites on the Internet. DART uses "non personally identifiable information" and does NOT track personal information about you, such as your name, email address, physical address, etc. You may opt out of the use of the DART cookie by visiting the Google ad and content network privacy policy at http://www.google.com/privacy_ads.html
