Free online PDF editor: sign, fill, annotate and redact

Open a PDF and add what you need: a typed, drawn or uploaded signature, text boxes to fill in forms, pen scribbles and a highlighter, shapes and arrows, comments, pictures, check marks and dates. You can also edit the text already in a PDF, black out (redact) private details, and rotate, delete, reorder and add pages. When you are done, press Download PDF.

Private by design: the file is opened and edited entirely inside your browser, using pdf.js and pdf-lib. Nothing is uploaded to any server, so it is safe for contracts, tax forms and IDs. Your saved signatures stay in this browser only.

How to sign a PDF

  1. Open the PDF (or drop it on the page).
  2. Pick the Sign tool, then Create signature: type your name in a handwriting font, draw it with the mouse, trackpad, finger or pen, or upload a photo of your signature (the white background is removed).
  3. Click where it should go on the page, then drag to move it or drag a corner to resize it.
  4. Press Download PDF. The signature is saved in the file as part of the page.

How to edit text in a PDF

Use the Edit text tool and click a line of text. The editor covers the old text with a patch that matches the paper colour and puts an editable text box in its place, with a similar font and size. Because PDFs are not word-processor files, this works best for short changes (a date, a name, a number). For a form, use the Text tool to type into the blanks.

Redacting: a black box is not enough, unless you flatten

Covering text with a black rectangle hides it on screen, but the words can still be inside the file underneath. To remove them for real, turn on Flatten pages when you download: every page is turned into a picture, so the hidden text is gone (the file becomes larger and the text is no longer selectable).

Questions

Is it really free and private?
Yes. No sign-up, no watermark and no upload: the work happens on your device.
Is my signature legally valid?
An image of your signature placed on a PDF is accepted for many everyday documents, but it is not a certified digital signature. For contracts that require one, check what the other party asks for.
Can I fill in the form fields of a PDF form?
Yes. If the PDF has fillable fields, the editor tells you; choose the Fill form tool and type into the highlighted text boxes, tick the check boxes and radio buttons, and pick from the drop-downs. For a form with no fields (a scan, for instance), use the Text tool and check-mark stamps to fill it in by hand.
Does it work with a password-protected PDF?
Yes: you are asked for the password. The edited copy is saved as flattened pages when the file cannot be re-written directly.
Does it work on a phone or tablet?
Yes, with touch and pen support; the page list and tools adapt to small screens. A larger screen is more comfortable for detailed work.
What happens to my work if I close the tab?
It is not saved on any server. The page warns you before you leave with unsaved edits, so download the PDF when you are done.
