- Preload from November 10. The download then has nine days instead of launch night, when everyone downloads at once.
- Plug in a cable if you can: Ethernet is usually much faster and steadier than Wi-Fi.
- Pause other downloads and streaming on the same internet while it downloads.
- Keep the console in rest mode with downloads allowed (PS5: Settings › System › Power Saving › Features Available in Rest Mode; Xbox: Sleep mode with updates on).
- Leave room to spare. Updates and saves need space too, so aim for at least 50 GB free on top.

How long will GTA 6 take to download?
The game is about 212 GB. At 100 Mbps that is roughly 5 to 6 hours in real life, at 25 Mbps nearly a day, and on gigabit fibre well under an hour. The calculator divides the size by your speed, then allows for the fact that real downloads rarely reach the plan's full speed, and Wi-Fi loses more on the way.
The maths
Sizes in the stores are decimal gigabytes (1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes = 8,000,000,000 bits), and internet plans are sold in megabits per second. So the time in seconds is the size in GB × 8,000 ÷ the speed in Mbps, divided by how much of the speed you really get. Consoles show download speed in MB/s (megabytes), which is the Mbps figure divided by 8.
Questions
- Will GTA 6 fit on a PS5?
- An original 825 GB PS5 has about 667 GB free for games out of the box, so it fits if you have not filled it up, but GTA 6 alone takes about a third. Check Settings › Storage for your real free space.
- Will it fit on an Xbox Series S?
- The 512 GB Series S has only about 364 GB for games, so GTA 6 takes most of it. You may need to delete other games or use an expansion card.
- Should I preload?
- Yes, if you can. Preloading opens on November 10, and downloading early avoids launch-night traffic, when servers and home internet are at their busiest.
