A free English dictionary with pronunciation, translation and your own word list

Type any English word and press Define (or Enter). You get every meaning, grouped by part of speech (noun, verb, adjective ...), with labels such as mathematics, informal or transitive, example sentences, and the synonyms and antonyms for each meaning. Every underlined word in a definition can be looked up with one press, so you can follow a word you don't know without leaving the page. Below the meanings: where the word comes from (its etymology), its forms (plural, past tense, comparative), related and derived words, and the word in other languages.

Hear it, read it aloud, translate it

Hear it says the word with a voice on your device; the Pronunciation box adds the syllables with the stressed one marked, the IPA, an easy respelling and recordings of real speakers from Wikimedia Commons, with a link to MES Pronounce for slow and syllable-by-syllable playback. Read aloud reads the definitions, lighting up each one as it goes. Translate opens the word in MES Translate in the language you choose.

    Save words and learn them

Press Save to keep a word and its meaning in your list. Flashcards show a word and turn over to its meaning; the ones you know come back less and less often (1, 2, 4, 8 and 16 days), the ones you miss come back at once. The Quiz gives a meaning and four words to choose from. Make a backup file, restore it on another computer, or share your list as a link.

    Questions

Where do the definitions come from?
From Wiktionary, the free dictionary written by volunteers, under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike licence (CC BY-SA 4.0). Each entry links to its Wiktionary page. When Wiktionary cannot be reached, the page tries the free dictionaryapi.dev, which is also built from Wiktionary. Syllables and IPA come from the CMU Pronouncing Dictionary (BSD licence), the same data as MES Pronounce. The word of the day and its short meaning are written by MES.
Can I link to a word?
Yes: the address mes.fm/define?w=serendipity opens that word. Share copies it, or opens your phone's share menu.
    What is "On MES"?
When a word is the subject of an MES calculator, tool or tutorial (percentage, torsion, orbit, inflation ...), those pages are shown as cards under the definition.
    Is anything sent or saved?
The word you look up is sent to Wiktionary (and dictionaryapi.dev if needed) to fetch its entry. Your saved words, recent lookups and flashcard progress stay in this browser only; nothing is stored on mes.fm.
