Voice typing speed test: how fast can you talk to type?

This is the speaking version of the MES Typing Test. Read a passage out loud and your browser's speech recognition (dictation) types it for you. The test measures your words per minute and your accuracy: how many of the words the computer understood correctly. It is a fair way to compare voice-to-text speeds, and the leaderboard is kept apart from the keyboard tests.

How it works

  • Press Start and allow the microphone. The passage is on screen the whole time.
  • Read it out loud at your own pace. The clock starts with your first word and stops with your last. Pauses count against you, so keep going.
  • Press Done (Ctrl+Enter), or just stop talking once you have read the whole passage and it finishes by itself.
  • Your result shows the passage with every word right, misheard or skipped marked.

How is it scored?

Accuracy compares what the computer heard with the passage, letter by letter. Capital letters and punctuation are ignored unless you tick Strict, because dictation adds them its own way. WPM is the correct characters divided by five, divided by the minutes from your first word to your last. A score needs 90% accuracy to be posted to the leaderboard. Scores are reported by your own browser, so treat the board as for fun.

Tips and browser support

  • Speech recognition works in Chrome, Edge and Safari (desktop and phone). Firefox does not support it yet. On Chrome the audio is processed by Google's speech service; this page never records or stores it.
  • Use a quiet room and a headset or a good microphone. Pick the accent closest to yours.
  • Speak clearly and evenly. Most people dictate at 120 to 160 words per minute; recognition accuracy drops when you rush.
