Free typing speed test: WPM, accuracy and consistency

Type the words you see, and the clock does the rest. This typing test measures your words per minute (WPM), your accuracy and how consistent your speed is, then shows which keys cost you the most time and mistakes. Choose a timed test (15, 30, 60 or 120 seconds), a fixed number of words, a short or long passage, or paste your own text. Five difficulty levels run from home-row-friendly beginner words to expert text full of capitals, punctuation and numbers. It is free, needs no account and works on phones and tablets as well as keyboards. Your history stays in your browser.

How is WPM calculated?

One "word" is five characters, spaces included, which is the standard used by typing tests and typing teachers. WPM (net speed) counts only characters in words you typed correctly, divided by five, divided by the minutes taken. Raw WPM counts every character you typed, right or wrong. Accuracy is the share of key presses that were correct, so a mistake you fix with backspace still counts against it: slow, clean typing and fast, messy typing score differently on purpose. Consistency compares your speed second by second: 100 means a steady pace, low numbers mean bursts and stalls.

What is a good typing speed?

  • Under 20 WPM: just starting, or hunting for keys.
  • About 40 WPM: roughly the average adult speed.
  • 50 to 65 WPM: comfortable for school and office work.
  • 65 to 80 WPM: professional level, typical for transcription and data entry jobs.
  • 100+ WPM: expert level. Beyond this, accuracy matters more than raw speed.

How to type faster

  • Accuracy first. Slow down until you hit 95% or better; speed follows once the finger movements are automatic.
  • Don't look at the keyboard. Use the home row (A S D F and J K L ;) and let each finger return to it.
  • Look ahead. Read two or three words in front of the one you are typing.
  • Practise your weak keys. After every test the keyboard map shows which keys you miss or hit slowly; Practise my weak keys builds the next test from the words that contain them.
  • Short and often. Ten minutes a day beats an hour once a week.

Challenge a friend

After a test, Copy challenge link gives you a link with the exact same text and your score to beat. Whoever opens it types the same words.
