Why grab a thumbnail link instead of a screenshot?
A screenshot only captures whatever resolution your screen happens to render. The direct thumbnail link is the platform's own source file — full resolution, ready to reuse in a blog post, a video description, a forum reply, or anywhere else that accepts an image URL.
Why does YouTube show several sizes?
YouTube generates a few fixed thumbnail sizes per video, but the largest ones (maxresdefault, sddefault) only exist if the uploader's video was itself high enough resolution. This tool checks each size in order and only shows the ones that actually exist for that video.
Is anything sent to a server?
Only the platforms that don't allow looking up a video from the browser directly (3Speak, BitChute, Odysee, Rumble) route through a small lookup on mes.fm's own server, which does nothing but ask that platform for its public thumbnail and hand it back — nothing you paste is stored. YouTube thumbnails are fetched directly from YouTube's own image servers, with no server involved at all.
