Zodiac sign and birth chart calculator
Type your birthday to get your Sun sign (star sign), Moon sign and Chinese zodiac animal and element. Add the time and place you were born for your rising sign (ascendant), the twelve houses and a chart wheel with Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto, each with its sign, degree and whether it was retrograde, plus the Moon phase on the day you were born.
How it is worked out
- Positions. Where the Sun, Moon and planets were, seen from Earth, comes from Astronomy Engine (accurate to well under a minute of arc), on the ecliptic of the date. The signs are the tropical zodiac used by Western astrology: 30° each, starting at the March equinox.
- Time zone. Your local birth time is turned into world time with your browser’s time-zone database, daylight saving included; the offset used is shown under the form. For an old date or an unusual place, type the offset yourself (for example +05:30).
- Moon sign without a time. The Moon changes sign every two to three days. If it did so on your birthday, the page says so and gives both signs with the time of the change.
- Rising sign and houses. The ascendant is the point of the zodiac rising on the eastern horizon at your birth time and place; it moves through all twelve signs in a day, so it needs both. Houses are whole-sign (house 1 = the whole rising sign) or equal (30° from the ascendant): simple systems that work at any latitude. Placidus and Koch are not offered.
- Chinese zodiac. The Chinese year starts at Lunar New Year (a new moon between 21 January and 20 February), not on 1 January, so people born in January or early February often belong to the previous year’s animal.
Questions
Why is my sign different on another website?
Near a sign change (a “cusp”) the exact day moves by a day between years, and many sites use fixed dates. This page works it out for your actual date and time. Sidereal (Vedic) astrology uses a zodiac shifted by about 24°, so its signs are usually one sign earlier.
Are the zodiac signs the same as the constellations?
No. The signs were named after constellations about 2,000 years ago; since then the slow wobble of Earth’s axis has shifted the sky by almost a whole sign, so on your birthday the Sun was usually in the constellation before your sign.
Is anything I type stored?
No. Everything is computed in your browser, and the share link only exists if you copy it.
