Photo and Video Viewer for Your Folders, Private and Fast

Free photo and video viewer in your browser: open a folder (with subfolders) and see thousands of pictures and videos in rows, squares, masonry or a list, grouped by day, month, folder or type. Big viewer with zoom, slideshow, rotation, favourites and star ratings, and video speed controls from 0.25x to 4x with frame steps and A-B loops. Nothing is uploaded.

Private: your photos and videos never leave this computer. The page reads them straight from the folder you open, in this browser tab; small thumbnails are kept in this browser so the next visit is instant. Nothing is uploaded.

A photo and video viewer for your own folders

MES Gallery shows the photos and videos on your computer the way a good photo app does: rows of thumbnails that fill the screen, grouped by day, month, folder or type, and a big viewer with zoom, slideshow and proper video speed controls. It works on folders with thousands of files, and everything stays on your computer.

How to use it

  1. Open a folder (subfolders included) or pick some files. You can also drag a folder or files onto the page.
  2. Choose a layout: Rows (every row fills the width, like Google Photos), Squares, Masonry (whole pictures in columns) or List with the details. The slider sets the thumbnail size.
  3. Group by day, month, year, folder or photos / videos, sort by date, name, size, type, rating or picture size, and search by name or folder (beach -2019 leaves out names with 2019, .mp4 shows one file type).
  4. Click a picture to open it. Use the arrow keys or swipe, scroll or pinch to zoom, drag to look around, and press P or Space for a slideshow.

Questions

Is anything uploaded?

No. The browser reads the files you open directly from your disk. Thumbnails, your favourites and star ratings are stored in this browser only (clear them with "Forget saved thumbnails" in the Open menu, or by clearing the site's data).

Which browsers work best?

Chrome, Edge and Opera on a computer can open a folder and remember it, so next time one click ("Open … again") brings your photos back. Firefox, Safari and Brave open folders with the browser's own "upload a folder" window instead (nothing is actually uploaded, the word is just the browser's); they have to be picked again on each visit. In Brave you can turn on the better way at brave://flags/#file-system-access-api. On phones, use "Open photos or videos".

Why does a file show a plain tile?

Browsers can only show the picture and video formats they understand. JPEG, PNG, GIF, WebP, AVIF, MP4, MOV (H.264) and WebM work everywhere; HEIC photos only show in Safari, and AVI, WMV or FLV videos need converting first, for example with the MES Video Converter.

Where does the date come from?

From the "date taken" saved in the photo by the camera (EXIF) when there is one, else a date in the file name (like IMG_20240501_…), else the date the file was last changed.

Can I edit a photo?

Yes: "Edit in Photo Editor" in the viewer copies the photo and opens the MES Photo Editor in a new tab; press Ctrl+V (⌘V on a Mac) there to paste it in.

Can I install it like an app?

Yes, in Chrome or Edge use "Install" (or "Add to Home screen") in the browser menu. The installed app opens in its own window and can be chosen in "Open with" for pictures and videos.
