Time Calculator: Hours Between Times, Add and Subtract Time
Free time calculator: the hours and minutes between two times (overnight shifts included), add and subtract hours, minutes and seconds, total a list of times like a timesheet with breaks, and convert to decimal hours for payroll.
An end time earlier than the start counts as the next day (a night shift). A break typed as a plain number is in minutes; 1h 15m or 1:15 work too.
Different days? Add dates
Dates are counted as calendar days; a daylight-saving clock change in between is not added or taken off.
A time of day plus or minus a duration
A duration with another duration
Type 1:30 (hours:minutes), 2:45:30, 1h 30m, 90 min or 1.5 h. A plain number is hours. To multiply or divide, the second box takes a plain number such as 3.
Add up a list of times
| Day | In | Out | Break | Hours | Remove |

Break is unpaid time taken off the row (a plain number = minutes). A row whose Out is earlier than In ends the next morning. Everything is saved in this browser only.
Pay and overtime (optional)
Daily overtime is counted first, then hours past the weekly limit (in row order), so no hour is counted twice. Overtime rules differ by country, state and contract: check yours.
Minutes to decimal hours (for payroll)
How to calculate the hours between two times
Take the end time minus the start time. If the end is earlier than the start, the shift runs past midnight, so add 24 hours. Then take off any unpaid break. Example: 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM is 8 hours 30 minutes; minus a 30-minute lunch that is 8:00, or 8.00 decimal hours. A night shift from 10:00 PM to 6:30 AM is 8 hours 30 minutes.
Hours and minutes vs decimal hours
Payroll systems usually want decimal hours: minutes divided by 60. So 7 hours 45 minutes is 7 + 45/60 = 7.75 hours, and 7.75 hours back to clock form is 7:45, not 7:75. Common values: 15 min = 0.25 h, 20 min = 0.33 h, 30 min = 0.5 h, 45 min = 0.75 h. Multiply decimal hours by the hourly rate to get pay: 7.75 × $20 = $155.
Adding and subtracting durations
Add seconds to seconds, minutes to minutes and hours to hours, then carry every 60 seconds into a minute and every 60 minutes into an hour. 2:45:30 + 1:20:45: 30 + 45 = 75 s = 1 min 15 s; 45 + 20 + 1 = 66 min = 1 h 6 min; 2 + 1 + 1 = 4 h, so the answer is 4:06:15.
Overtime
In the US the federal rule is overtime after 40 hours in a work week, at 1.5 times the regular rate; a few states (California, for one) also count overtime after 8 hours in a day. Canadian provinces typically use 8 hours a day or 40-44 a week. This page lets you switch each rule on and change the numbers, and never counts the same hour twice.
Questions
- How many hours is 8 AM to 5 PM?
- 9 hours; with a 1-hour unpaid lunch, 8 hours.
- How do I convert minutes to decimal hours?
- Divide by 60. 40 minutes = 40 ÷ 60 = 0.67 hours. The table on the Convert tab lists every 5 minutes.
- Can I enter times in 24-hour format?
- Yes. Every time box takes either style (18:30 or 6:30 pm); the small 12h / 24h switch inside the box changes how times are shown on every MES page.
- What does "round to the nearest 15 minutes" do?
- It rounds each day's worked time, so 7:53 becomes 8:00 and 7:52 becomes 7:45. Some employers round punches this way; others pay to the minute.
- Is my timesheet stored anywhere?
- Only in this browser (localStorage). Nothing is uploaded. Copy it as a table to paste into a spreadsheet or email.
