Weighted Average Calculator

Free weighted average calculator: enter grades with their weights, credits or percentages and get the weighted average, the plain average and a step-by-step table. Paste from a spreadsheet, save your list and open it on any device with a link.

Enter each grade (or any number) and how much it counts: credits, hours, points or a percentage. Only the weights relative to each other matter.

Enter at least one grade and its weight to see the average — or try an example:

About the weighted average calculator

Although a weighted average calculator is often used to find an overall semester average for courses that count for different numbers of credits, the same calculation works for any group of numbers: assignments, tests, courses or whole semesters. It can also give a plain, unweighted average: set every weight to the same value (the Equal weights button sets them all to 1).

How does it work?

A basic average adds up the grades and divides by how many there are. A weighted average multiplies each grade by its weight, adds those up, and divides by the total weight:

  • Basic average = (Grade1 + Grade2 + …) ÷ (number of grades)
  • Weighted average = (Grade1 × Weight1 + Grade2 × Weight2 + …) ÷ (Weight1 + Weight2 + …)

For example, grades of 90, 80 and 70 with credits 3, 4 and 2 give (90×3 + 80×4 + 70×2) ÷ 9 = 730 ÷ 9 = 81.11, a little higher than the plain average of 80 because the 90 counts for more than the 70.

Good to know

  • Percentage weights (e.g. 20%, 30%, 50%) work the same way; they do not have to add up to 100.
