Your sets of picks are saved in this browser as you go. A link carries the name and the picks, nothing else, and nothing is stored on a server: whoever opens it gets the picks as a new set, scored on the day they look.

Leaderboard

Everyone’s picks are scored against the same live standings, worked out on the server. Picks made after the season started are marked with how many games had been played, so early birds get the credit; playoff picks close when the playoffs start.

Track your NHL standings and Stanley Cup predictions against the live table

MES NHL Picks checks your predicted order of the Eastern and Western Conference (16 teams each, the top 8 make the playoffs), the four divisions and the whole league (1 to 32, by points) against the current NHL standings, and scores your playoff picks (second round, conference finals, Stanley Cup Final and champion) as the series are played.

How the scores work

Exact, within 1, 2 or 3 spots, right tier (playoffs or out; top 3 in a division), right side of the line, points (3 exact, 2 one off, 1 two off), closeness and Spearman’s ρ. Teams on the same points after the same number of games share their spots. Playoff picks earn 1 point for each second-round team you got right, 2 for each conference finalist, 4 for each Cup finalist and 8 for the champion.

Questions

Where do the standings come from?

From ESPN’s public standings and scoreboard feeds, refreshed about every 10 minutes. The whole-league table is ordered by points, then fewer games played, then wins.

Is anything about me stored?

Your picks stay in this browser. Only if you post to the leaderboard are the name you chose and your picks stored, with a private key in your browser that lets you change or remove them.
